Volunteers create meaningful improvements to hospital care experiences

SARNIA & PETROLIA – December 6, 2022 – This December, Bluewater Health is celebrating 10 years of involvement from patient experience partners (PEPs) – a volunteer role that allows patients and family members to share their unique insights on the care they receive at the Sarnia and Petrolia hospitals.

On December 6, 2012, the PEP Council met to set their terms of reference, kicking off a decade of bringing the patient and family voice to quality improvement initiatives. PEPs work together with staff, professional staff, and other volunteers – such as board members – to influence Bluewater Health’s policies and practices, to redesign care, and to educate people about what creates a great healthcare experience.

“In healthcare, the patient, family and care partner perspective is so important for providing quality care and developing effective quality improvement initiatives,” says Shannon Landry, Chief Nursing Executive. “When organizations commit to truly listening to the patient, family and care partner voice, we can create a higher quality, more patient-focused system. Their voice is invaluable in creating the system that they utilize.”

The main focus of PEPs is using their lived experience as a patient or family member at Bluewater Health to make the healthcare experience better for future patients and families.

“The impact of PEPs in our hospital is tangible,” said Brenna Turvey, Co-Chair, PEP Council. “It’s encouraging to know that decisions made by Bluewater Health – from the helipad to hospital food – are brought to our council for feedback. Bluewater Health not only allows feedback from families and patients, but they encourage it, and they value it knowing the weight that it carries.”

Bluewater Health’s PEPs should be reflective of those who use hospital services, representing the diversity of age, gender, race, culture and health conditions seen throughout the hospital. For more information about volunteering as a PEP, visit
